One of my New Year's resolutions this year was to read at least three classic novels. Because I was an English major, I read many of them in college, but then I was reading to pass the test or write the paper and didn't really get to enjoy them.I am happy to report that this morning I finished Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. A summary from amazon.com:
A ne'er-do-well exploits his gentle daughter's beauty for social advancement in this masterpiece of tragic fiction. Hardy's 1891 novel defied convention to focus on the rural lower class for a frank treatment of sexuality and religion. Then and now, his sympathetic portrait of a victim of Victorian hypocrisy offers compelling reading.
I chose to start with this novel because I remembered enjoying it in college and hoped it would be good again. It was!!! Definitely not a quick and easy read but VERY good! I highly recommend it. Any suggestions for what I should tackle next??

Yeah - good for you over there - Now I want to read it too - I rarely pick up a classic. I did read Uncle Tom's Cabin last year - which I really enjoyed AND Jane Eyre - you can never go wrong with that one!!!
Great book! Try Great Expectations next. I actually liked it when I read it in 11th grade.
